Nests

NESTS

In the crab apple tree sits a nest
where last year blue jays built a twig nest
to raise their family
nestled quite cozily.

All through the winter the nest was seen
after the tree dropped its leaves of green.
Some days piled high when the snow flew.
Other days swayed when a wind blew through.

But the nest was built high in the crotch
where it remained secure in its notch
to withstand many of nature's storms -
rather snow, rain, or wind storms.

This spring morning a gray mourning dove and her husband
were seen taking up residence in the nest abandoned.
There they sat nestled side by side
though the nest isn't very wide.

Cuddled in their new home
in the treetop enthroned.
I wonder if their coo-coo was in agreement?
If they asked for my vote, it would be agreement.

For in a few weeks
babies might peek -
quite curious
and serious.

Making up their minds
if I'm a foe or kind.
Soon they will fly;
I'll want to cry.

Some day I will learn;
for each year I mourn
when babies fly the coop
leaving me behind to cope.

* * * * *

Have you ever watched a feathered family
raise their brood of fledglings up in the heavenlies?
They have a lesson to teach us.
These life lessons are a must.

You'll learn it takes a mother and a father
to raise a brood of fledglings together.
These parents work together to build a secure nest or home.
After the nest is prepared, they give birth to daughters and sons.

Together they take turns sitting,
talking, planning, dreaming, waiting.
Then when the babies are hatched
the real work begins in their thatch.

Every hour or so one flies in
with a yummy dinner or a drink brings.
The babies beaks open wide
while one parent is seen nigh.

That parent keeps a keen look out
for whatever danger is about.
They they change places, for taking care of their little ones
is too big of a responsibility for just one.

They have much to teach
in just two weeks
all their birdbrain knows
to their babies who grow.

Though human parents have many more years
to teach their children what's right or what to fear,
even though sometimes children seem outside their reach,
feathered parents have the same lessons to teach.

When human fledglings mature
after being nurtured
parents have a hard time adjusting
to the now empty-nest syndrome.

Feathered parents
learn to adjust,
just as human parents
must someday adjust.

* * * * *

How quickly the years went by.
Too soon it's time to say bye-bye.
Though children think they have learned,
they soon find out there's still much to learn.

Here's a lesson to remember:
kids know it all as a teenager.
At 20 or so they know they know more than their parents.
Around 30 or so they realize they had smart parents.
At 40 they find out they didn't know it all.
Around 50 they know they'll never know it all.
And that there's something new to learn everyday
if they have an eager mind to learn each day.

So if you think your situation is hopeless, it's not.
Give your child a chance to learn and one day what was taught
will come full circle.
A prayed-for miracle.

Train up a child in the way he should go
and when he is old he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)

These commandments that I give you today
are to be upon your hearts.
Impress them on your children.
Talk about them when you sit at home
and when you walk along the road,
when you lie down and when you get up.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Five sparrows are sold for two pennies.
Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.
Indeed the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Don't be afraid;
you are worth more than many sparrows.
Luke 12:6-7

Look at the birds of the air;
they do not sow or reap or store away in barns,
and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not much more valuable than they?
Matthew 6:26

Songfest

SONGFEST

Yesterday stormy,
blustery, flurries
in my county.

Today it's sparkly
as it turned out quite sunny
though frosty and icy.

Someone sounds lovely,
cheery, lively, bubbly.
Heard singing brightly.

I think you'll agree
though you can't see
who's lovely to me.

Because they're hungry
they sing sweetly
for something yummy.

With breasts downy
and knees knobby
chirping loudly.

They eat seeds oily
at this party
sounding merry.

They try oranges tangy
and millet tasty
while chatting happily.

Oh no! Someone haughty
comes acting rowdy,
sassy, not friendly.

Sounding off-key,
shrewd and shrilly.
Singing sharply.

Can be feisty.
Might be huffy,
grouchy, grumpy.

Doesn't act nicely.
Does eat hearty
and yaks loudly.

For blue jays greedy
and somewhat snooty
yearly scares birdies.

Little birdies
become chatty.
Away they hurry.

These sweet tweeties
take a journey
to the valley.

Miss their beauty.
Little pudgy
gray chickadees...

bring much delight to me.
A winter jubilee
when they come say "howdy."

Singing sweetly,
sounding lovely,
lively, bubbly...

happy, merry,
cheery, yearly
on their journey.

A joyous chickadee
songfest jubilee
is waiting for me.

* * * * *

My mother daily feeds the birds.
Her goal is to feed the small birds,
yet the blue jays and squirrels
know when breakfast is served.
This doesn't make my mother happy
when small birds are chased away daily.

Perhaps a lesson can be gleaned
from these bullies who are being mean.
These bigger bullies are selfish and are not prone to sharing.
Their actions show they only think of themselves, vs. caring.
Are their actions inbred?
Can that be truly said?

Don't be like these bullies who are greedy and selfish.
Be known for your kindness, goodness, and gentleness.
Be known for being generous and willing to share.
Your legacy. Let those in need know you really care.
Be it the smallest creatures or those who are hurting,
be a friend to those in need. God is pleased when you're willing.

...the time of the singing of birds is come...
Song of Songs 2:12 (KJV)

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit,
but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
Philippians 2:3

If you harbor bitter and selfish ambition in your hearts,
do not boast about it or deny the truth.
Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven
but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil.
For where you have envy and selfish ambition,
there you find disorder and every evil practice.
James 3:14-16

Command them to do good,
to be rich in good deeds,
and to be generous and willing to share.
I Timothy 6:18

Do not forget to do good and to share with others,
for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
Hebrews 13:16

Woven

WOVEN

Mama cardinal with her orange beak
hunting for dried grasses she now seeks
woven together into a nest
where one day brown speckled eggs will rest.

Behind the trumpet vine
is where you can now find
the nest being woven
started early one morn.

She’s a master at designing.
She’s heard singing while she’s weaving.
With grasses her home is knit
as she sings out chit-chit-chit.

She does weave expertly
and waits expectantly
for she knows what’s ahead.
Her husband is bright red.

One egg was laid sometime Thursday.
Another one spotted Friday.
Still another egg seen on Saturday.
Brown speckled in the woven grass and hay.

Mama cardinal sits on the woven nest
while red plumed papa cardinal seems to rest
in the nearby lilac bush.
I can see his feathered tush.

A surprise today – another egg was seen.
Mama now returns where she sits like a queen.
It seems the woven nest is too small
for these four brown-speckled eggs so small.

As she wove the grasses together
her life is being woven for her
for she’ll have four offspring
to raise for two weeks this spring.

I wonder if she’s excited to be a mama?
Does she talk about it with her offspring’s papa?
He’s always someplace nearby
when you look up toward the sky…

sometimes in the budding lilacs, sometimes seen on the fence,
sometimes in the weeping cherry if I happen to glance.
Sometimes I can hear him sing “cheerio-o-o”
as encouragement to his wife he often shows.

Out the back door I now go.
There mama cardinal goes.
Chit-chit-chit can be heard
calling for papa bird.

Here comes red papa
talking to mama.
Cheerio-o-o.
Cheerio-o-o.

Chit-chit-chit
mama chats.
Cheerio-o-o.
papa sings out low.

I can hardly wait to see
the baby cardinals wee.
Just 12 more days it will take
to see their most ugly face.

They’ll be all beak and no feathers.
Only a parent's love could mother
these somewhat ugly mugs
ready for a parent’s hug.

These babies lives are being woven as they are taught to give
when their parents teach them the essentials of how to live -
to wake up early with a glad song in their heart
so humans can begin their day with a fresh start.

* * * * *

In the Old Testament Bible story of old
we read about an upright man named Job.
Satan planned to trick blameless Job
into abandoning his faith, we're told.

You see Job’s life was being woven together
by God who does have a good plan and purpose for
each and every problem in this lifetime we face
for our life is woven together by God’s grace.

The Master Designer has a good plan
for every human – each man and woman.
He knits our life together
with happiness - and troubles.

It’s in troubles we learn to depend
on our God who will be there to fend.
We learn God will be always faithful
as He bestows blessings by the handful.

Not only will we learn patience through our difficulties,
we learn about God’s everlasting love, joy, and peace.
We learn to be kind, good, faithful, gentle and
we learn needed self-control – all God’s good plan.

In the New Testament Jesus told (Simon) Peter
that Satan asked permission to sift him as wheat.
Just as with Job, God had a greater purpose for Peter.
God knew that difficulties would one day hone Peter's faith.

We read about God’s greater purpose in I and II Peter
where Peter encourages us in our trials and troubles.
Peter was given a greater portion of God’s grace
to deal with the many difficulties he would face.

God has a good plan and purpose for us in weaving together
what might be construed as buffeting from Satan, the deceiver.
As with Job and with Peter, God is refining us to come forth as gold
so that we will give God the glory and end up with a testimony bold.

Your life, too, is now being woven
by the Master Designer.
Listen to these words God has spoken
(He’s the polisher and refiner):
God is for you and with you
and will never leave you.

God has a solution for your problems
but first you must give them over to Him.
You are not meant to bear your burdens alone
for burdens will leave you weary and worn.
Learn to view your burdens as unrecognized blessings
for burdens should bring us to God instead of stressing.

And that’s exactly where the blessing lies –
when we seek God first He will surprise
with peace and joy for our life -
a life lived without strife.
What was sent from Satan as stressing
will end up turned into a blessing.

When up against a brick wall,
or when you feel you might fall,
when life seems null,
learn to view all
your disappointments,
and appointments
as God’s weaving -
it will end up pleasing
for God has a good plan and purpose,
one which spoils Satan’s ruse.

Try not to dwell on the here and now.
Look beyond to the end for somehow,
in God's time, He has a purpose for us
that can only be born out of trust.
Our troubles will weave for us
faith believing, which is a must.

Faith is meant to be active,
not ever to be passive.
Faith will grow as we daily trust
in God who has a good plan for us.
Believe and give God glory
for you are writing God's story.

Others will see
your faith and believe.
Your troubles
then have purpose.
God will abundantly bless you
for giving Him glory too.

The fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control.
Galatians 5:22-23

Satan has asked to sift you as wheat.
But I have prayed for you, Simon,
that your faith may not fail.
And when you have turned back,
strengthen your brothers.
Luke 22:31-32

He knows the way that I take;
when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold.
Job 23:10

Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.
Hebrews 13:5

Cast all your anxiety on him
because he cares for you.
I Peter 5:7

I know the plan I have for you, declares the Lord,
plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.
Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me,
and I will listen to you.
You will seek me and find me
when you seek me with all your heart.

Shine

I shared this verse on my facebook page today.
It reminded me of a poem I had written
based on Philippians 2:15:
Shine like stars in the universe.
(Written as a potential song.)

May your light shine forth brightly.

Shine in the midst of your troubles
proclaiming that God is able.
Others will see you as an example
for when life seems to be impossible
they need a light that shines forth
showing them troubles have worth,
giving hope in their heartache,
bringing God's peace to their hearts.

Shine in your words, deeds, and actions
for others you'll be attracting
as you shine bright with God's light
always proclaiming what's right,
offering encouragement
to those you have met
with loving understanding and
often giving a helping hand.

Others will see your passion
when as a star you do shine -
so shine bright as the stars
today right where you are.
God's purpose for you from your birth
is to shine like stars in the universe
to be a shining light in the darkness
so be a light and shine, shine forth.

Chorus:
Always be loving, patient and kind
for God's plan for you is to shine.
Ambassadors in the family of faith
always illuminating God's truth.
God's purpose for you from your birth
is to shine like stars in the universe
to be a shining light in the darkness
so be a light and shine, shine forth.

...shine like stars in the universe...
Philippians 2:15

Entertainment

ENTERTAINMENT

Intending to share sunflower seeds,
sunflower heads are cut to dry.
Each head is filled with hundreds of seeds,
so friends will not need to buy.

But yesterday's procrastination on my part
has provided this morning's entertainment
for garden guests have come in
this sunny morning.

A feast, a banquet, a smorgasbord awaits
for those who came this morning to swipe.
They were here before first light
to feast to their heart's delight.

Gray titmice arrive
eating side by side.
Yakking up a storm
this sunny morn.

Mama cardinal with her orange beak
is here for a free breakfast she seeks.
Does she have a nest
where her young ones rest?

Look there...a chubby squirrel scampers in
causing feathered friends to fly in the wind.
His checks are full
with black seeds stored.

I see two striped chipmunks
peeking out behind the tree trunk.
Quite comical they are as they hustle,
then with each other romp and tussle.

But when the chipmunks see me
they're off as quick as can be
hiding in the drain pipe
now hidden out of sight.

Gray mourning doves and brown sparrows
have eaten fallen seeds down low.
They don't mind dining side by side
though others guests seem to vie...

for little chickadees
I no longer see
as blue jays chased away
these black-capped guests today.

The ground is littered with hulls
from sunflower seeds which fell
after the buffet was consumed.
There's nothing left for this afternoon.

The mourning doves have left.
The titmice are no longer guests.
The squirrels are taking a snooze.
The chipmunks left without a clue.

It's now quiet.
No entertainment.
No feathered friends.
This story ends.

The smorgasbord of creatures have gone
but if I listen I can hear their song
as they entertain someone else
at another banquet where it's help yourself.

* * * * *

This true story really happened one autumn morning
as I had procrastinated the previous evening.
This story reminds me of another story regarding leftovers.
We read it about in the Gospels, between the Bible's covers.

One meaning of leftovers, let's stress,
could mean we are not once, but doubly blessed.
Today we'll focus on what remained, the leftovers,
or the "broken pieces" as referred to in Scripture.

The gospel writers refer to these leftovers as broken pieces.
We all know life is filled with heartaches, some which never ceases.
Our heartache left us with broken pieces or brokenness.
Confused. Hurt. Discredited. Rejected. Damaged. A mess.

Do our heartaches or broken pieces serve a purpose?
For our maturity? Definitely, YES!
It's when we seek God fully.
The God of all comfort - truly!

The Japanese will repair pottery that was broken
with gold, creating a beautiful reminder, that mends.
In the end the object is more valuable.
That's what our brokenness does: we're more valuable.

Our broken pieces have value and worth.
Don't stay in a state of depression, come forth
into the light of God's mercy, grace, and love.
He's here, right now, for you, with a ready hug.

Nothing goes to waste in God's economy.
Not leftovers, not broken pieces, not you or me.
Let God use your brokenness for your good
and for God's glory, as only He could.

Taking the five loaves and the two fish
and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves....
They all ate and were satisfied,
and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces
that were left over.
Matthew 14:19a,20

Taking the five loaves and the two fish
and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks....
they all ate and were satisfied,
and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls
of broken pieces of bread and fish.
Mark 6:41a,42-43

Taking the five loaves and the two fish
and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them....
They all ate and were satisfied,
and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls
of broken pieces that were left over.
Luke 9:16a-17

Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,
and distributed to those who were seated...
When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples,
"Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted."
So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets
with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over...
John 6:11a-13

The Father of compassion and the God of all comfort.
II Corinthians 1:3b

He knows the way that I take;
when he has tested me,
I will come forth as gold.

A Busy Pollinator Day 8/17/17

The hummingbird moth (above) kind of reminds me of a shrimp.
They are fast moving, so difficult to photograph.

This swallowtail was rather tattered.
A lesson in perseverance, to not give up.

Giant Swallowtail below.
Photos are not the best,
but considering how fast moving they are
it's difficult to get a clear photo.

Bees seem to be more photogenic.

Thanks for viewing.
